Literacy Defined and Statistics

Half of your users can’t read your website

National Reading Statistics

Did you know that 50% of Americans read at an eighth-grade level? And that most websites are written at a tenth-grade level? 60% of Urban School Children do not graduate from High School. Forty percent of those who do read at only a 4th grade level.
The deepest downturn in the educational process occurs in the fourth grade.

THIS MEANS if YOU HAVE FAILED to give children confidence that they can learn to read by the time they are 8 or 9 years old you will have lost them for life. They cannot recover.

Can you imagine 50% of the users of your website having difficulty understanding it? Most websites are too difficult for half of  their visitors to read and use.
Dr. Summers presented compelling evidence about reading behaviors of lower literacy users and  a 2005 presentation, Reading and Navigational Strategies of Web Users with Lower Literacy Skills, is well worth your time.

The money didn't go to Reading First  it went to Ignite! and Voyager Expanded Learning Neil Bush's business'

The Game:
Yes this is how it all really works and why America can't read with our Ph.D Higher Ed supply chain system in place over the last 50 years. Big publishers definitely have a leg up on smaller reading companies.

Follow the Money:
The business of reading vendors, publishers, and how they awarded the government's (tax paper) money and conflicts of interest. The legal questions AND organizational conflicts of interest. The goal is to prevent contractors and subcontractors from providing technical assistance for products in which they have a direct interest.
