Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity , to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.

6.  NEW BOOK REVIEW
----------------------------------
The library in the twenty-first century
2nd edition, by Peter Brophy
facet publishing, 2007
ISBN 978-1-85604-606-0

Once again, time does not permit an in depth book review this month, so this will be the briefest of looks at this new edition of Peter Brophy's The library in the twentieth century.

This book was originally conceived because Brophy was convinced that there was a real danger that libraries and librarians might be left behind in a world which is relying more and more on digital information and knowledge being transmitted almost instantaneously from any place to any other place. Although we have become awash with information objects (Web pages, ebooks, ejournals, news items, multimedia, learning objects, and much more), somehow libraries seem no longer to be at the centre of information organisation. He therefore wanted to analyse how libraries could become successful and relevant in such a world, and to think systematically and strategically about the future of libraries. In the seven years between the first and second editions, there have been tremendous changes in the information world, and Brophy has undertaken a wholesale rewriting, but the purpose remains largely the same.

The library in the twentieth century is in two parts. Part 1 looks at fundamental issues and in particular, what is a library from different perspectives. Part 2 looks at possible models for the future - the library as an information intermediary, or the library with a far wider range of functions. It looks at users, and the information in use. It looks at the information universe, including Web 2.0, Open Access, Metadata, preservation, and so on.

It also looks, for example, at social networking, and why libraries should feel threatened (because: social networking creates communities which are not based on physical proximity, whilst the traditional library is based on a physical presence; because social networking operates in cyberspace where those involved will share freely available electronic resources without the need for any involvement by the library; and because social networking services are presenting content including some which might previously have been available in libraries).

This is an important work and an extremely thought-provoking one for anyone involved in the information world. Peter Brophy is not only able to see the big picture, but he is also an expert on many aspects of the fine detail. This makes The library in the twentieth century vital reading for anyone who wants to understand many of the issues facing the information profession at the present time, and in the future.
