Charter School Program (CSP) (December 3, 2007 [CFDA# 84.282A])

Purpose of Program: The purpose of the CSP is to increase national
understanding of the charter school model and to expand the number
of high-quality charter schools available to students across the
Nation by providing financial assistance for the planning, program
design, and initial implementation of charter schools, and to
evaluate the effects of charter schools, including their effects on
students, student academic achievement, staff, and parents. The
Secretary awards grants to State educational agencies (SEAs) to
enable them to conduct charter school programs in their States.
SEAs use their CSP funds to award subgrants to non-SEA eligible
applicants for planning, program design, and initial implementation
of a charter school, and to support the dissemination of
information about, including information on successful practices
in, charter schools.
Applications Available: December 3, 2007.
Deadline for Transmittal of Applications: February 1, 2008.
Eligible Applicants: State educational agencies (SEA) in States
with a State statute specifically authorizing the establishment of
charter schools.
Estimated Range of Awards: $500,000-$10,000,000 per year.
Estimated Average Size of Awards: $5,000,000 per year.
Estimated Number of Awards: 8-10.

Grants for the Integration of Schools and Mental Health Systems
(Federal Register: December 7, 2007 [CFDA# 84.215M])

Purpose of Program: Grants for the Integration of Schools and
Mental Health Systems will provide funds to increase student access
to high-quality mental health care by developing innovative
approaches that link school systems with the local mental health
system.
Applications Available: December 7, 2007.
Deadline for Transmittal of Applications: January 30, 2008.
Eligible Applicants: State educational agencies, local
educational agencies (LEAs), including charter schools that are
considered LEAs under State law, and Indian tribes.
Estimated Range of Awards: $150,000-$350,000.
Estimated Average Size of Awards: $250,000.
Estimated Number of Awards: 19.

Steppingstones of Technology Innovation for Children with
Disabilities (Federal Register: December 10, 2007 [CFDA#

Purpose of Program: The purpose of the Technology and Media
Services for Individuals with Disabilities program is to: (1)
Improve results for children with disabilities by promoting the
development, demonstration, and use of technology, (2) support
educational media services activities designed to be of educational
value in the classroom setting to children with disabilities, and
(3) provide support for captioning and video description that are
appropriate for use in the classroom setting.
Applications Available: December 10, 2007.
Deadline for transmittal of applications: Phase 1,
Development -- January 9, 2008; and Phase 2, Research on
Effectiveness -- January 9, 2008.
Eligible Applicants: State educational agencies (SEAs); local
educational agencies (LEAs); public charter schools that are LEAs
under State law; IHEs; other public agencies; private nonprofit
organizations; outlying areas; freely associated States; Indian
tribes or tribal organizations; and for-profit organizations.
Estimated available funds: Phase 1, Development -- $1,800,000;
and Phase 2, Research on Effectiveness -- $1,200,000.
Estimated range of awards: Phase 1, Development -- $100,000-
$200,000; and Phase 2, Research on Effectiveness -- $200,000-
$300,000.
Estimated average size of awards: Phase 1, Development --
$200,000; and Phase 2, Research on Effectiveness -- $300,000.
