  Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (Federal Register:
  January 8, 2008 [CFDA# 84.184E])

Purpose of Program: Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools
(REMS) grants support efforts by local educational agencies (LEAs)
to improve and strengthen their school emergency management plans,
including by training school personnel and students in emergency
management procedures; communicating with parents about emergency
plans and procedures; and coordinating with local law enforcement,
public safety, public health, and mental health agencies.
    Applications Available: January 8, 2008.
    Deadline for Transmittal of Applications: February 19, 2008.
    Eligible Applicants: LEAs, including charter schools that are
considered LEAs under State law, that do not currently have an
active grant under the REMS program.  For the purpose of this
eligibility requirement, a grant is considered active until the end
of the grant's project or funding period, including any extensions
of those periods that extend the grantee's authority to obligate
funds.
    Estimated Available Funds: $24,000,000.
    Estimated Range of Awards: $100,000-$500,000.
    Estimated Average Size of Awards: $100,000 for small districts
(1-20 school facilities); $250,000 for medium-sized districts (21-
75 school facilities); and $500,000 for large districts (76 or more
school facilities).
    Estimated Number of Awards: 96.

  Professional Development for Arts Educators (PDAE) Program
  (Federal Register: January 10, 2008 [CFDA# 84.351C])

Purpose of Program: This program supports the implementation of
high-quality professional development model programs in music,
dance, drama, media arts, or visual arts, including folk arts, for
arts educators and other instructional staff of kindergarten
through grade 12 (K-12) students in high-poverty schools.  Grants
are intended to strengthen the capacity of teachers and schools to
deliver standards-based arts education programs and to raise
student academic achievement in the arts and ensure that all
students meet challenging State academic content standards.
    Applications Available: January 10, 2008.
    Deadline for Notice of Intent To Apply: February 11, 2008.
    Deadline for Transmittal of Applications: February 29, 2008.
    Eligible Applicants: An LEA, which may be a charter school that
is considered an LEA under State law and regulations, that is
acting on behalf of an individual school or schools that meets the
poverty criterion with respect to children from low-income families
that is specified in the application requirement section elsewhere
in this notice, and that must work in partnership with one or more
of the following:  A State or local non-profit or governmental arts
organization; a State educational agency (SEA) or regional
educational service agency; an institution of higher education; or
a public or private agency, institution, or organization, including
a museum, an arts education association, a library, a theater, or a
community- or faith-based organization.
    Estimated Available Funds: $6,275,939.
    Estimated Range of Awards: $100,000-$350,000 for the first year
of the project.  Funding for the second and third years is subject
to the availability of funds and the approval of continuation
awards (see 34 CFR 75.253).
    Estimated Average Size of Awards: $200,000.
    Estimated Number of Awards: 30.
