TAU student develops software that ranks facial attractiveness

Most people can tell you if the person they are looking at is
attractive, but they can't tell you why they think so. Now, a Tel Aviv
University student has developed software to crack the age-old problem
of identifying facial features that would be considered beautiful by
most people.
"Until now, computers have been taught to identify basic facial
characteristics - like is this a woman's face or a man's," explains
Amit Kagian, who developed the program for his master's thesis in
computer science.
The program identifies basic facial features that are considered beautiful. For his master's thesis at Tel Aviv University, Amit Kagian had human participants rate the beauty of photographed faces. He then processed the photos and mathematically mapped the faces by computer, coming up with 98 numbers that represent the geometric shape of the face, hair color, smoothness of skin, facial symmetry, and other characteristics. The computer then uses these dimensions to predict how human subjects would rate other female faces. The study only covered female faces because "there is a greater variety of positions regarding male beauty,"
Haaretz said.

This page examines the sexiness of some top-ranked "sexy" fashion
models. For reasons explained shortly, the masculinity-femininity
of physical appearance will be the main focus here. Readers not
familiar with the subtlety of masculinity-femininity should go
through the [25]feminine vs. masculine page before proceeding.

The results of this study should not be surprising, and one might
think it remarkable that some researcher would spend time
documenting this, but hard evidence that feminists have been
unfairly blaming patriarchy, yet again, is welcome.

The 2005 Miss World beauty pageant has once again featured plenty of
masculinized contestants, and some comments in this regard are
relevant.
What follow are some pictures of the masculinized contestants.
[49]Miss World Organization often does not provide clear (close-up)
pictures of its contestants at its site, and one is tempted to
believe that part of the reason is the unattractiveness of many of
its contestants, which Miss World Organization would not be too
willing to make clear to the public.

Drop-dead gorgeous women?
2006 Sports Illustrated Swmsuit issue cover models.
Fig 1. Shown from left: Elsa Benitez, Veronica Varekova, Elle
MacPherson, Rebecca Romijn, Rachel Hunter, Daniella Pestova,
Yamila Diaz-Rahi, Carolyn Murphy.
Of the 8 women shown above, except Elsa Benitez, the others have
excessive facial masculinization. If all the 7 masculinized women
were in their twenties, except Daniela Pestova, the others would
still have excessive facial masculinization. Additionally, at the
time this photo was taken, Rachel Hunter, Yamila-Diaz Rahi, Elle
MacPherson and Rebecca Romijn had the faces of male transvestites.
The more interesting point is that the annual Sports Illustrated
swimsuit issue is oriented toward heterosexual men, and it sells
briskly, which underscores the need for this site. If the masses of
heterosexual men knew any better, they would seek alternative
publications for pictures of attractive women.
