Woodstock 'WOODY GUTHRIE Bday Hoot'- 7/12, Colony Cafe, Woodstock NY
Folk Legend Woody Guthrie’s Birthday Celebration to be Held in Woodstock by Activist-Musicians
Woodstock, NY: The acknowledged founder of the folk revival, Woody Guthrie, who’s also recalled as the prototypical protest singer, will be celebrated on Saturday, July 12. The event, which will occur in the historic Colony Café in Woodstock NY, is the second annual Guthrie birthday tribute to be held in Woodstock, a place known at least as much for its radical politics as for its arts. This seems highly appropriate given Woody’s history as a cultural worker. This tribute is a celebration of Guthrie and the social protest movements he sang the soundtrack to…
Woody Guthrie was born on July 14, 1912 and died on October 3, 1967 of Huntington’s Disease. This year would have marked Woody’s 96th birthday. During his life, Guthrie wrote and performed songs that championed the lives of working people, the fight against oppression, and the inherent beauty in our nation. Guthrie set the standard for topical musicians in future generations, who continue to model themselves on this itinerant performer who adorned his guitar with the inscription “This Machine Kills Fascists”. Many of Woody’s most outspoken songs and poems will be heard this year, as last, in Woodstock.
The event will feature multiple acts, each with their own unique vision of Guthrie’s songs of social justice.

In addition to offering individual sets of music, Guthrie compositions and those associated by or inspired by him, the musicians will all come together for a grand finale, performing Woody’s famous “This Land is Your Land”, including all of its rarely-heard verses.
