War Letters is a simple site which aims to database as many old war
correspondence letters as possible and to make them freely available
online to all web users. With these letters, often photographs,
drawings, love poems and other miscellanous objects are included. All
of these are scanned and presented in as simple a format as possible.
Many times these letters tell a passionate real life love story between
a soldier and his sweetheart back home, othertimes its the story of a
family thousands of miles appart depeserate to keep in contact and
occassionaly its the life of an ambitious soldier seeking a name for
himself and interested in documenting his efforts.
Although this site is intended primarly for those doing local
historical and ancestoral research, (our site is formatted to suit
them), a large bulk of web traffic are world war enthusiasts, novelists
seeking new material for a book, veterans interested in rekindling
memories and many a romanticists looking for a sad love story to fill
their lunch break. We welcome you all.
Nevertheless, all readers should be aware that our site is intended for
historical research and therefore all letters must and are displayed in
an unfiltered, unbiased and uncensored way. We must advise you that due
to the nature of war and people, some content may be offensive to you.
Please be cautioned that some material is related to nazism, racism,
sex explicit and many forms of extreme violence and death.
All letters in the war letters database are scanned, and transcribed
into text form. Although we try to keep the text as accurate as
possible, time does not allow us to remove all errors. The text is
primarly intended to allow search engines to spider the content of the
letters. Therefore instead of relying on this text, we invite you to
look at the primary source for yourself, by clicking on the letter
page, a magnified version of it becomes available. Any unworded
documents such as photos are also included as attractments appearing
after the letters. Please check out the
referencing page for more information about how letters and attachments are arranged. The
site map
lists how many pages and attachments were in each envelope along with
the date. Preference was given to the date on the letter itself, if
this was not available the postmark on the envelope was used.
