« Take the 2008 Speak Up Survey Open Now T... | Main | Senator Ted Stevens Arrested »
October 1, 2008 – The Thornburg Center for Space Exploration has created a contest
for Middle and High-school students to imagine new jobs that will exist by the year
2020. In addition to creating an interesting job description, contestants will have to
identify the skills needed by applicants for these new positions. Entries have to be
received by January 31, 2009, and the winners will be announced in March.

Dr. David Thornburg, Executive Director of the Thornburg
Center for Space Exploration, created this event because “Students may not
always see the relevance of the subjects they are studying. By defining and
specifying the details of possible jobs they can visualize for the future,
the issue of relevance is addressed.”

While no one knows exactly what new jobs and careers will be in place by 2020,
we can safely assume that some of these will be far different from anything
people are doing today. As Thornburg says: “Students might gain awareness
of the skills needed to run a hotel in near-Earth orbit, or those needed for
removing space junk before it damages functioning satellites. As famed
personal computer pioneer Alan Kay once said, 'The best way to predict
the future is to invent it.' This is exactly what students will be doing in this exciting contest.”
