Uncle Ray Cordeiro Worlds Longest Serving DJ
http://xrl.in/1b67
He's been named the world's "most durable DJ" by the Guinness Book of World Records. Hong
Kong veteran
Ray Cordeiro, better known as 'Uncle Ray' to his
listeners, has spent six decades entertaining listeners
while rubbing
elbows with some of music's most famous and prolific artists.
Uncle
Ray' continues to host his weekly oldies show "All The Way With Ray",
the longest-running broadcast programme in Hong Kong.
And while he may be turning 84 this December, the world's oldest disc jockey shows no signs of slowing down.
Anyone
in Hong Kong who is a fan of English pop oldies and nostalgia music
would have heard of 'Uncle Ray' Cordeiro and his radio show "All The
Way With Ray."
For 38 years, veteran DJ Ray Cordeiro has
been hosting this popular radio show with the
same friendly baritone
voice and trademark white cap.
His show, Hong Kong's longest running radio programme ever, airs weeknights
from 10pm until 2am on public broadcaster RTHK.
It
offers up a mix of pop oldies from the 60s and the 70s, from the
Beatles to the
Rolling Stones, to classics like Frank Sinatra and Tony
Bennett.
His experience from nearly six-decades in
broadcasting is on display every time he gets
into the booth, where the
soon-to-be eighty-four-year-old operates solo from playing lists to
sound engineering.
It's not easy, but even after hosting
"All The Way With Ray" for almost forty years, this radio legend
shows
no signs of slowing down, citing his lifelong passion for music as the
driving force behind his longevity.
Although Cordeiro
has had to give up certain physical activities such as tennis and
swimming as he gets
older, hosting his radio show is one thing he says
he will keep doing as long as his health allows him.
He rarely takes holidays and sickness does not stop him from going to work.
He loves doing what he does so much that he thinks the job itself actually keeps him healthy and well.
Having
worked in the music industry for so many years, it's no wonder Ray
Cordeiro also
owns an extensive collection of records and memorabilia.
His
collection of over twenty thousand LPs includes several rarities and
copies signed by some
of the greatest names in pop music history; along
with these treasured collections, he has also
accumulated a lifetime of
memorable moments.
Born in Hong Kong in 1924, Ray
Cordeiro began his DJ career in 1949 when he joined Radio
Reddifusion
and went on air with his first program, Progressive Jazz.
In
1960 he joined Radio Television Hong Kong, eventually developing such
pioneering
programmes as Lucky Dip, Hong Kong's first live audience pop
music show for teenagers.
Ten years later in 1970, Uncle
Ray began his now-famous "All The Way With Ray" show and
almost forty
years on, it remains on the air.
Over the course of his
career, Cordeiro has met and interviewed many music personalities and
legends in the music business such as Cliff Richards, Tony Bennett and
Paul Anka, but it was the
Beatles that gave him one of the best moments
in his career.
He first met the Fab Four in 1964 at a
press conference in England, convincing all four members of the
band to
autograph a copy of FAB magazine he still has in his possession today.
He
would interview The Beatles twice in Britain and again during their
visit to Hong Kong, an achievement
Ray considers the highlight of his
long and prolific career.
Over the years Uncle Ray has
built a global following, with many fans now able to listen to his show
online via the RTHK website.
Hugh Chiverton, his
colleague and Head of the Radio 3 English Channel at RTHK,
thinks Ray's
show has lasted so long and appeals to so many people because the
music
and the format he choses connects well with the listeners.
It's
this connection he has with his listeners that makes many Hong Kong
people think of
Ray Cordeiro, although of Portuguese descent, one of
their own.
Ray Cordeiro's contributions to Hong Kong have not gone unnoticed.
After receiving a lifetime achievement in broadcasting award from RTHK in 1997,
the government of Hong Kong honoured 'Uncle
Ray'
Cordeiro with a Bronze Bauhinia Star medal in October this year for
"recognition of his life
long contribution to the promotion of popular
music", according to the Government's official news release.
Over the years, 'Uncle Ray' has received several other illustrious awards and honours.
This
includes an award given by Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. for more than
30 years of work
contributing to Elvis and his fan club in Hong Kong.
Uncle Ray also made history when he was awarded 'The World's Most Durable DJ' by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000.
But
Cordeiro received perhaps the highest honour in 1987 when he was
awarded the Member
of the Order of the British Empire by Queen
Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace.
And if 'Uncle Ray' ever gets his wish, he might even become 'Sir Uncle Ray' some day.
Whether
that wish would come true is yet to be seen, but one thing is certain -
Hong Kong's much
respected 'Uncle Ray' will likely continue to
entertain his fans while introducing
whole new generations to his
passion for music. He celebrates his birthday on 12 December.
