In general, folks who follow hummingbirds in the eastern U.S. report
fewer vagrants this winter than in some years past. Nonetheless, we
did manage to capture a young male Rufous Hummingbird at Matthews NC,
and that's the topic of our current "This Week at Hilton Pond" photo
essay. To view our 8-14 January 2009 installment, please visit

The big "blizzard" forecast for the Carolina Piedmont on Inauguration
Day Eve fizzled out and left sparse white stuff on the ground "This
Week at Hilton Pond." Despite minimal snow cover, there was plenty of
activity at our feeders and we caught lots of several species of
finches. Of even greater interest was the Sharp-shinned Hawk that
came to partake of our songbird buffet.

For a photo essay on the snow, some winter finches and their potential
predator, and even an image of a Carolina Jessamine visit our 15-21
January 2009 installment at

By the way, if you usually stop reading after the photo essay, we
always encourage you to continue scrolling down the page to a section
that includes a tally of all birds banded during the period. There's
also a list of recaptures--there were some dandies this week--and
miscellaneous notes about other nature happenings around Hilton Pond.

Our next installments will be posted in March after we return from
our annual hummingbird banding expeditions to Costa Rica. Until then . . .

As always we include a tally of all birds banded during the period,
along with an interesting assortment of recaptures.
