Hi, I am interested in how the music industry works. I want to know how music is licensed for legal distribution over the internet, what are the terms of said license and how dose the record labels make there money.

music law covers all this

From my understanding a company like Apple or Napster acquires a license for specific songs and/or albums at no initial cost with the understanding that if and when a customer purchases a song or album the rights holder gets 10% of that transaction. Example: When Amazon goes to Sony/BMG or Universal to sell MP3's of their music what do these license agreements usually contain? When Amazon sells an MP3 for 99ยข or an album $9.99 how much of that transaction goes to the record label and with the money that the label gets do they then pay the artists their cut?

getting the label to pay you - no one I know, can really explain how this business works.

I have looked through your web site and it seems to contain information for song writers and independent artist, maybe I missed what I was looking for but I was hoping you could please clarify to me what is involved with music licensing for sale as a download.

Every songwriter should have a solid understanding of basic licensing.
