Awards Now Open with New Categories for 2010

Today we are pleased to announce the opening of awards season 2010. This will be our 87th year of seeking out the best young artists and writers from across the country. In an effort to best reflect the evolving modes of expression, we have refined our guidelines and added a few new categories:

Video Games: Entries can consist of anything from demonstrations of working Mac or PC programs to storyboards and character sketches, but should be original—no sequels or re-interpretations.

Persuasive Writing: An argument in favor of a specific view or position—an essay, editorial, or speech. Entries should be clear and thorough, with facts and data to support the author’s opinion. Sources must be cited, and the manuscript must not rely on visuals, graphs, or images.

Creativity and Citizenship: Freedom of Expression: Works from either art or writing can be submitted for consideration in this forum that seeks to answer the question “What do you believe will create a better future for The United States of America?” This exploration of constructive creativity is presented by The Alliance and the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. If you would like to learn more about participating in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, send an email to info@artandwriting.org.

The Best Teen Writing of 2009 Now Available

We are pleased to announce that The Best Teen Writing of 2009 has been assembled. Virginia Pfaehler, poet and past Gold Medal Portfolio Award recipient, spent the summer culling the best examples of writing from last year's Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. After selecting 48 pieces that capture the emotion and intelligence of the next generation of writers, we are proud to offer it for your enjoyment.

Within its pages you will find highlights from each of the categories from poetry to personal essay, fantasy to humor as well as pieces from each of our Portfolio Gold Medal recipients and a letter from Elie Wiesel. We are grateful to Amazon.com for helping us to present this collection of the most compelling new American voices from every corner of the United States and abroad.
