Happy Reading for Today
1)
Have you caught this story yet?  How Zappos pays people to QUIT?
Took almost a week for the story to show up in the straight news
and you wonder why print is dying, why new media is eating newspapers' lunch...

For those in large organizations and government agencies who have to create
budgets for software purchases...
It's speculated that Adobe will release Acrobat 9 sometime this summer, and
the Creative Suite around the end of the year, or early 2009.

AIGA|Aquent Survey of Design Salaries 2008
View the survey PDF
This survey draws from an extensive pool of designers and others allied with the profession nationwide, and includes responses from more than 5,000 design professionals. The surveys are widely recognized as the most comprehensive surveys of compensation conducted in these professional positions. Visit www.designsalaries.org to use the interactive Salary Calculator.

FYI: The survey is based
on annual salaries, not hourly rates. And it is for people who are
employed, not contracted. (The position of "solo designer" is the
closest they come to discussing freelance or self-employed, but it
doesn't specify what type of designer.)

There can be a big difference when one has to pay for one's own
benefits,  a la "contract."  Benefits cost approximately 30%
http:// www.ebri.org/publications/benfaq/index.cfm?fa=ovfaq1 . And one pays
the "self employment tax" when one is contract.

Websmart color is:
"Time passed, as it so frequently does, and new hardware supported thousands
or millions of colors. People grew tired of the old 216 colors. They wanted
more earth tones, more variety. The *web-smart* colors are those 4096 colors
composed of any three pairs of identical hexadecimal digits (0-9 and a-f),
such as #dd1188."

"The annual report into web habits by usability guru Jakob Nielsen shows people are
becoming much less patient when they go online.  Instead of dawdling on websites many

"Scheduled for release in 2010, the new fingertip interface lets users enlarge and shrink photos,
trace routes on maps, paint pictures or play the piano.  'The way you interact with the system will
change dramatically,' said Microsoft chairman Bill Gates."

New word for the day Protoversy
http://torley.com/start-a-protroversy-today
In Torley Linden's words:
What's a "protroversy", you might ask? ..."pro" is the opposite
of "con"...
"Controversy" is often laced with poisonous negative overtones and
much argument which leads to no better change, just the futile
flapping of gums in a stale, stanky wind and a depressing sense of
wussy indecision. But protroversy involves clear & specific
differences:

    * Overall positive vibes that you celebrate, not bickering for the
sake of discussion, because you've already thought about and said
enough on the matter, and now's the time to move forward.

    * Not being here to argue/debate, but here to make positive action
with like minds. Some people who disagree may try to slow you down
with words (it always happens), but really, they're being lazy-asses
and should start a protroversy of their own. The world's a big enough
place for a diverse ecology of successes.

    * Passion that focuses on the advancement of ideas, as opposed to
attacking ideas. Bad ideas have already been weeded out to a
reasonable degree, and you aren't here to knock down others.

    * Protroversy means you take charge of what you believe in, and
charge ahead. This isn't doing so blindly; quite the opposite. You've
done your research, listened attentively to other perspectives on the
issues at hand, and now have the conviction, the strength, and the
agility to make and use a decision.

Thus, at the heart of protroversy is the possibility that people who
aren't in agreement will react the same way they would if it was a
controversy, but you won't be wasting time & energy arguing back. You
may've already answered good questions in a FAQ, and yes, a
protroversy can follow a controversy.

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.

I find television very educational. Every time someone switches it on I go into another room and read a good book.
