According to Reuters, "the energy package would revoke $17 billion in tax breaks extended to big oil companies like Exxon Mobil Corp and slap a 25 percent windfall profits tax on firms that don't invest in new energy sources." Oil producers gave an average of $134,821 to each of the 43 senators that voted no and an average of $37,373 to each of the 51 senators that voted yes. This is why we need the political reforms pushed by Senator Obama, and opposed by Senator McCain.

I am writing to let you know that as of August 31, 2008, Microsoft will change the level of support to be offered for music purchased directly from MSN Music prior to November 14, 2006. As of August 31, 2008, we will no longer be able to support the retrieval of license keys for the songs you purchased from MSN Music or the authorization of additional computers. License keys already obtained as of August 31, 2008 will continue to allow you to listen to songs on all the computers that you previously authorized for service. We wanted to send out this notification well in advance to remind you to backup your music and to provide you sufficient time to confirm license keys for the songs you've purchased from MSN Music.

So we get to this question: how should the public react to bit-moving providers who gerrymander the service offering to the benefit of their Media Masters? If there were any real competitive alternatives, they could vote with their feet. without that alternative, however, are they simply at the mercy of the media giants to bend everything to their will?

It isn't just voting machines. Yes, the terminal in question was made by Diebold, and yes, their subsidiary, Premier Election Systems, has faced criticism for problems and vulnerabilities in its voting products. But that's not an entirely fair brush with which to paint this problem, since without knowing the details, it could just as easily have been caused entirely by the bank's software or configuration.

The news is better, and worse, than early coverage suggested. It's worse in that although New York attorney general Andrew Cuomo found child porn on just 88 Usenet newsgroups, the ISPs are pulling the plug on tens of thousands as a response. This is a little like burning down a library because you don't like one book in it.

In fact, every ISP we have talked with about this very much is *against* this practice, and we know that the unauthorized use of their logos is being looked at by their legal departments.
